Art Forms Cross-curriculum priorities

You don't need to be an arts specialist to use these resources — they're designed for any teacher looking to make meaningful connections across different areas of learning. The cross-curriculum courses and activities on ARTS:LIVE weave arts experiences together with broader themes that matter to Australian students and communities.

These resources explore connections between the arts and areas such as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures, sustainability, and Asia and Australia's engagement with Asia. Activities might include creating visual artworks inspired by Country, composing music that reflects environmental stories, or using drama to explore diverse cultural perspectives.

For children, these experiences build a deeper understanding of the world around them — encouraging empathy, curiosity, and a genuine sense of connection to community and place. Creative expression becomes a way of engaging meaningfully with big ideas.

    Years 2-6
    Visual storytelling is one of the oldest forms of storytelling, enlisting a range of mediums including song, dance, theatre, mime, craft, sign language and visual arts. Explore a range of ways to bring your story to life with the use of visual mediums such as picture storybooks.

    This resource helps students develop their songwriting ability and a deeper understanding of the role of the music industry in supporting and marketing musicians. Performance footage from the Bush Bands Bash Festival and interviews with contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander bands, Rayella and Yipirinya School Band are used as a stimulus to explore different cultural perspectives.

    Ever wanted to learn more about the craft of theatre-making? Stories from Home will take you through a structured ten lesson project and by the end, you will have an original show. Students will draw on fictional diary entries from refugee characters to inform their devising, play building and assessment tasks.
