Collections Bring Poetry Alive

Transform the way students experience language with Bring Poetry Alive, a vibrant collection that merges poetry, performance and creative expression. Spanning early years to upper primary, this collection supports teachers to build literacy skills through engaging, arts-rich approaches that make poetry meaningful and accessible.

Students explore rhythm, rhyme and storytelling through a diverse range of resources, from playful picture books like Too Many Cheeky Dogs and Go Home, Cheeky Animals! to performance-based experiences in rap, spoken word and drama. With high-quality videos (including Auslan-supported readings), lesson sequences, and creative activity guides, teachers can confidently deliver lessons that support reading, writing, speaking and listening.

Aligned to the Australian Curriculum: English and The Arts (Drama and Music), the collection encourages cultural understanding, particularly through authentic First Nations perspectives and storytelling. Visual and multimodal learning is also strengthened through concrete poetry tasks.

    Explore the language and musical conventions of rap, and create your own rap. Discover the historical, social and political context and influences of hip hop culture and rap music. Identify the musical and poetic elements used in a range of rap pieces, and undertake the process of developing and performing your own rap at an ‘open mic’.

    Years 5-6
    How can the meaning of words be presented in a visual way? Examine the abstract nature of words and consider their concrete form. Reflect on several concrete poets' works and use the techniques you have learned to create your own concrete poem.

    Get excited about the world of language and the possibilities of sound. Poetry And Drama introduces the process of breaking down a poem for performance, and offers suggestions as to how you can explore the rich language in contemporary and traditional poems.
